WTA Singles - Final

i• Williams had 14 winners to 18 unforced errors in the first set but finished the match with 34 winners to 29 unforced errors - a very positive 20 to 11 across the second and third sets, most of those errors coming in the first five games of the second set.i


i• Williams leads all active players for winning percentage when losing the first set, now 45.5% (70-84); Sharapova is next (38.5%) followed by Venus Williams (34.7%).i


i• The victory didn't just give Williams her 48th WTA title, it also made her the standalone leader for career titles at the Sony Open Tennis, this being her sixth - she also won it in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008 (Steffi Graf won the tournament five times, in 1987, 1988, 1994, 1995 and 1996).i


i• Williams is also just the fourth player ever to win any WTA event six times - Martina Navratilova has done it at 10 tournaments, Steffi Graf at six tournaments and Chris Evert at four tournaments.i


i• Sharapova fell to 0-5 in finals in Miami, having also been runner-up in 2005 (to Kim Clijsters), 2006 (to Svetlana Kuznetsova), 2011 (to Victoria Azarenka) and 2012 (to Agnieszka Radwanska).i

Maria Sharapova: "It's obviously been a really nice month," Sharapova said at the trophy ceremony. "It's disappointing to end it like this but Serena played a great match, and I'm sure we'll play a few more times this year."i


Serena Williams: "Maria definitely pushed me - she did a really great job today," Williams said. "Like she said, I look forward to our next matches - it's going to be really fun for the fans and for us and for everyone."i


And though she barely missed in the second half of the match, Williams did fumble the second half of her acceptance speech. "It's so good to be No.6 now," she said. "I mean... the sixth time. Oh gosh."i

• Fifth seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer captured their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 team title.i


• Qureshi and Rojer rallied from a set down in their first two matches en route to lifting their third team trophy.i


• The eighth-seeded Fyrstenberg and Matkowski dropped to a 13-22 record in tour-level finals together.i




Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi: “I feel ecstatic. We both knew we had to go all out to win a title, especially such a big one. Through the first week, it was a one man show with this guy, who carried me through to the quarter-finals. I knew I had to pick up my game. I’m very happy to have helped him out. I’ve never had such a big result the first quarter of the year, so it feels great. We’ve both been working really hard and it’s paid off.”i


On their run to the title: “Every day is a new day. We were six match points down in our second match. Everything turned around. Sometimes you need some luck to win these big tournaments. The tennis gods were on our side this tournament, but we also worked hard.”i


Jean-Julien Rojer: “It’s always nice to be back here. I have a lot of friends and family here. I’m extremely happy to win. If I could win any big tournament, this is right up there. This is pretty much my Grand Slam, so I’m very happy to win it.”i


On the upcoming transition to clay: “We play well on clay. It’s personally my favourite surface. I always seem to get good results during the clay-court season. The way we play suits all surfaces. It’s more about our mindset and executing our game styles.”i

i• Andy Murray became the first ATP World Tour player in Sony Open Tennis history to win the Miami final from match point down.i
i• David Ferrer held match point at 6-5 in the third set, but stopped play to challenge a Murray forehand, which was confirmed in by HawkEye.i
i• Murray claimed his ninth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown and first since 2011 Shanghai. He also defeated Ferrer in that final.i
i• Murray will move to No. 2 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday, overtaking Roger Federer.i
i• Ferrer fell to 20-17 in ATP World Tour finals and was seeking his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown (Paris 2012).i

Andy Murray: “It's taking a little while to sink in, because it's tough to think really at the end of the match. It was so tough physically and mentally, that you were just trying to play each point. I think it was an exciting match. I don't think either of us played our best tennis. There was a lot of breaks and ups and downs, quite a lot of mistakes from both of us. But what I did do was fight hard and showed good mental strength to get through that match, because it easily could have slipped away from me.”i


On jumping to World No. 2: “For me, it doesn't change a huge amount, but the fact that I'm moving up the [Emirates ATP] rankings is a good sign. I have been winning a lot of matches. My consistency has been better over the last few months. The rankings obviously reflect that. So I will try and keep working hard during the clay and hopefully, I can go higher.”i


David Ferrer: “I know it was a very good chance for me to win Miami. It's very difficult to win. There will be another situation like today, but my life doesn’t change for one match. I need to work hard and to be focused for the next tournaments.”i


On incorrectly challenging a call on match point: “It was a very close match. I had my chance on the match point. The ball, it was really close. I saw it out… I [made] my decision in that moment. It's a bad moment now. I don't want to think anymore about that. I want to forget as [fast] as possible.”i

i• Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik won their third and biggest WTA doubles title together on Sunday, beating Lisa Raymond and Laura Robson in the final of the Sony Open Tennis.i
i• Though they have been one of the top teams in the world this year, since winning Sydney, Petrova and Srebotnik had been shut out in all three finals they had gotten to - Doha, Dubai and Indian Wells.i
i• No.3-seeded Russian-Slovenian duo broke that pattern in Miami, storming through the first set in just 21 minutes then twice rallying from a break down in the second set - including breaking down 6-5 just to stay in the set - to beat the breakthrough wildcard pairing of Raymond and Robson, 61 76(2).i
i• Petrova and Srebotnik now have three WTA doubles titles together, having also won Moscow in 2008 and Sydney earlier this year. Individually, Petrova now has 23 WTA doubles titles and Srebotnik 32 - and both had already conquered Miami as well, Petrova winning it twice before in 2004 (with Meghann Shaughnessy) and 2012 (with Maria Kirilenko) and Srebotnik once before in 2008 (with Ai Sugiyama).i
i• Raymond and Robson had been the breakout team of the tournament, a multi-generational combo that clicked immediately and had taken out three seeds in straight sets en route to the final - No.6 seed Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, No.4 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina and No.1 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci - their win over Errani and Vinci came by a 61 62 scoreline.i
i• The generation gap couldn't be clearer if you look at their records in finals - Raymond was playing her 121st WTA doubles final, now 79-42 in those, while Robson was in her first WTA doubles final.i

Nadia Petrova: "In the first set we were very focused," Petrova said afterwards. "We tried to be dominant and that worked. We broke them a couple of times. It was important for us to start strong. In the second set there were a few deciding points that could have gone either way and we were a bit unlucky there, but we were strong in the tie-breaker. It was very important for us not to let it get to the super tie-breaker."i


i"They (Raymond and Robson) are matching each other very well," Petrova commented. "Lisa has a great serve-and-volley game and is good at the net. Laura is serving big - her advantage is being lefty, because that's very difficult for a right-hander, and she has really powerful groundstrokes. You have to set the point well against them - if the ball is a little short, that's it. Lisa is all over the net or she goes at the net person."i




Katarina Srebotnik: "In the first set we were very focused," Petrova said afterwards. "We tried to be dominant and that worked. We broke them a couple of times. i"We're really pleased with our performance throughout the whole year so far," Srebotnik said. "We started off winning Sydney, then apart from losing against the Williams sisters in the Australian Open, every tournament we've played we've made it at least to the final. After three runner-ups we knew sooner or later we'd win again, but even if we didn't win today we'd be really happy with the final. We appreciate making finals, we know how tough it is to make it this far. But winning today is great."i
