Singles – Final

i• Williams, who has now won 71 of 75 matches since the start of last year's clay court season, won her third Family Circle Cup title - she won the Premier-level clay court event in 2008 and 2012 as well.i


i• Williams now has 49 WTA titles. Only nine women have won 50 or more WTA titles, namely Martina Navratilova (167), Chris Evert (154), Steffi Graf (107), Margaret Court (92), Evonne Goolagong-Cawley (68), Billie Jean King (67), Lindsay Davenport (55), Virginia Wade (55) and Monica Seles (53).i


i• Despite the loss, Jankovic has a lot to look forward to. In mid-February she was coming off a 12-month stretch where she had lost more matches than she had won - but since then she has gone 14-3, a stretch that has included winning Bogotá, making the semifinals of Miami and now the final here.i


i• For the second year in a row, Serena Williams is queen of the green clay. In the first three-set final since Serena beat Vera Zvonareva in 2008, the world No. 1 came back from a set down to win her third title in Charleston 3-6 6-0 6-2 over Jelena Jankovic.i


i• Williams’ win was her third title of 2013, and she is expected to hold on to the No. 1 ranking at least through May 6, according to the WTA.i


i• Coming off a win in Miami and now Charleston, Williams said she never goes into a tournament expecting to lose.i


Serena Williams: ” I just expect to do the best I can,” she said. “If that meant that I won, then that’s great and if it meant that I lost but I played a good match, then I have to learn to be okay with that.”i


i"I was just trying to be more consistent," Williams said about the second set turnaround. "I felt so close in that first set. I felt like I could have been up 3-0. She was playing really, really well, but it was just a shot here, a shot there, and she played really well in the big points. And I had so many opportunities that I missed. She took advantage of all of that, and she went on to glory in that first set.i


i"After that I just got really relaxed and was like, 'Serena, you have to chill out and not get crazy and if you win, great. If not, you're trying. She's playing really well. Just try and do the best you can.'"i


Jelena Jankovic: "I thought I played pretty well in that first set - I was holding my serve and then waiting for my chance to break," Jankovic said. "In the second set I had 40-15 in that first game and then again in another couple of games I had 40-15, 40-0. I should have focused and gotten those games. Of course she's going to go up and feel much better and she's again in control. That was unfortunate for me.i


i"In the third set I had some chances but I got tired. It was my sixth match here and playing Serena is not easy - you have to run a lot of balls down and hit as hard as you can and give your maximum. She's so strong. She's the No.1 player in the world for a reason. She was the better one at the end." Jelena, who had been on a 10-match winning streak on clay and said she thought she’d had a great week. “I think I did a great job. I fought very well. I played some good tennis throughout the week, and you know, today playing Serena was great, too. It’s been a while since I played against her, so it’s always fun to play against a champion like her.”i


Doubles – Final

i• Kristina Mladenovic and Lucie Safarova made quite an impression in their first tournament together, winning the Premier-level Family Circle Cup doubles title in Charleston on Sunday.i


i• Safarova won her second WTA doubles title, her first coming right here last year (with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova); Mladenovic won her fourth WTA doubles title, after Montréal and Québec City last year (with Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Tatjana Malek) and Memphis this year (with Galina Voskoboeva).i


Kristina Mladenovic: "It was an amazing day - an amazing feeling to win this title here with Lucie," Mladenovic beamed. "It was our first time playing together and I would like to thank Lucie. I really enjoyed my week here and we played some really great tennis, and it's just really nice to win. I'm very excited about it."i


i"I would like to tell you she was dying on the court in this third match," Mladenovic jumped in. "She was even running for like 40-0 points, and I was telling her like, 'Calm down, calm down!'"i


i"To play in such a big stadium with such a big crowd is a really great feeling," Mladenovic added.i


Lucie Safarova: "Not on tour," Safarova said when she was asked in press whether she remembers ever playing three matches in one day. "I actually don't remember doing that."i


i"Kiki was so good because she was there and gave me her energy," Safarova said. "She wasn't supposed to do that. I was like, 'Okay, okay, I'm going to pull this through.' I have to thank you, Kiki."i


i"Every day there have been so many people coming to watch the matches, whether it's singles or doubles, and even our practice this morning," Safarova said. "It's great to see people here love tennis. I have always felt nice support when I'm playing at this tournament, so it's a really great thing."i
