Former World No. 1
Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he intends to defend his
Rogers Cup title, at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 hard-court tournament in Montreal next month, but the next few days should be telling as he increases his training.
“I would like to come back in Montreal in a week and a half,” the 23 year old told Spanish broadcaster, TVE, on Tuesday. “I have to force the knees and just see how far I can go.
“I have to wait and see how I continue to recover because I’ve only been back training for a week and a half and you always feel a bit happier. You start with lots of hope, but again the real test would be to see how I go when I really push my knees and I think that’s likely to happen in the coming days. So I hope it’s all good.”
The Mallorcan contested his last tour-level match on 31 May, when Swede
Robin Soderling handed him his first loss at Roland Garros.
He was unable to defend his title at The Championships,
Wimbledon, due to tendonitis in both knees.
Roger Federer captured his sixth title at the All England Club and regained the No. 1 spot in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings.
