RESULTS — SUNDAY, 11th of MAY, 2014

Women's Singles — Final
i[8] Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. [4] Simona Halep (ROU) 16 62 63

i Sharapova now has two WTA titles this year, Stuttgart and Madrid, and 31 WTA titles in her career

i The Russian has also clearly positioned herself as a favorite for the French Open — not only is she a perfect 11-0 on clay courts this year, she's also 46-3 on clay since falling to Li Na in the French Open semifinals in 2011

i The only losses coming to Serena Williams (in the 2012 Madrid quarterfinals, the 2013 Madrid final and 2013 French Open final — all three of those losses were in straight sets)i

i Sharapova will now rise from No.9 to No.7 on the new WTA Rankings

i She'll make an even bigger jump from No.10 to No.3 on the Road To Singapore leaderboard

i No.5-ranked Halep, winner of her first seven WTA titles over the last 12 months, and hungry for her first win over Sharapova

i Sharapova's next engagement comes this week in Rome, where she is bidding to recapture the title she won in 2011 and 2012

i Halep's displays in Madrid did her burgeoning reputation no harm and despite letting a one-set lead slip in the final is accentuating the positives

Maria Sharapova: "What a week," Sharapova said in her on-court interview right after the match. "Last year I lost in the finals and I really wanted to go one extra step this year, and it's just been such a fantastic week.i

i"Simona and I had played a couple of times before, but she's really on a different level now. I don't know how I pulled it off. In the first set I wasn't doing much to hurt her, and that's the tennis she's capable of playing — I knew I had to do some different things after the first set to win this match.i

i"I don't take any finals for granted, and every tournament means a lot to me. I came close last year, and I didn't have a great first set today, but I knew it wasn't over until the last point was played."i

i"I don't take these moments for granted because I know what it's like to be out and injured and trying to find your way back just to play tennis," Sharapova said after the final. "I really enjoy playing this sport. I like the work that I put in, and I want to get the opportunities to be in the final. So it doesn't matter if I'm playing on the moon or in Madrid, to be in the final position is an honor."i

Simona Halep: "I started very well, but she came back very well and deserves the title," Halep said. "She's a great competitor and she's fighting for every moment, every point. I learned a lot of things today.i

i"I don't have regrets. I'm just happy and want to enjoy the result, because my result, it's very big and it's a great experience to play the final in the biggest tournaments."i

Men's Singles — Final
i[1] R Nadal (ESP) d. [10] K Nishikori (JPN) 26 64 30 Ret'd (Back)i

i World No. 1 Nadal captured his 27th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title on Sunday as he fought back from a set and a break down

i The 27 year old became the first player to win four titles in the Spanish capital, adding to his victories in 2005 (d. Ljubicic), 2010 (d. Federer) and 2013 (d. Wawrinka)i

i Now with 63 tour-level crowns, the 27-year-old Nadal moves to standalone sixth on the Open Era title leaderboard, pulling to within one title of equalling Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras

i Nishikori was contesting his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final and saw his run of 14 successive wins come to an end

Nadal: "Winning at home is always more special than winning anywhere. Having the chance to play in front of your home crowd... is unforgettable for me. This city gives me a lot. This is a very important victory for me."i

Nishikori: "There is a lot of confidence I get from this tournament by beating [Ferrer] in three sets and playing well in the final today. It's going to be very exciting at [Roland Garros] because I never feel like this on clay."i

Men's Doubles — Final
i[6] D Nestor (CAN)/N Zimonjic (SRB) d. [1] B Bryan (USA)/M Bryan (USA) 64 62

i Nestor and Zimonjic captured their 26th ATP World Tour team title Sunday as they defeated World No. 1 pairing Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, ending the Americans' 24-match winning streak

i Victory takes the 41-year-old Nestor to 84 tour-level titles, giving him sole ownership of third place in the Open Era doubles title leaderboard, behind the Bryans

Nestor:"Today we played amazing. I think that's the most important thing, playing well on the big occasion. It's always important to at least stay close. Today we were fortunate to get ahead. The best thing is that we had some touch situations on serve and we fought through it. We've been resilient all year and it's nice to play our best match."i

Zimonjic: "It's always a big challenge to play the best in the world. They've been the best in the world for many years and hold many records. To be on the same court with Daniel, Mike and Bob is a great honour. They are the three best players in doubles. They won the most titles. It's always great to win a [ATP World Tour] Masters 1000, especially when we play like we did today."i
