Women's Singles — Final
i[1] Serena Williams (USA) d. [2] Maria Sharapova (RUS) 6-1, 6-4

i Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova to win the Mutua Madrid Open and retain her World No.1 ranking.i

i It was her 50th WTA title, making her just the 10th woman all-time to cross that milestone.i

i Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova in straight sets to not only win her 50th WTA title, but retain her No.1 ranking.i

i Williams is now the 10th player all-time to win 50 or more WTA titles. The first nine were Martina Navratilova (167), Chris Evert (154), Steffi Graf (107), Margaret Court (92), Evonne Goolagong (68), Billie Jean King (67), Lindsay Davenport (55), Virginia Wade (55) and finally Monica Seles (53).i

i And with seven, Williams is now in third place among active players for most WTA clay court titles, tied with Sharapova and Flavia Pennetta; Venus Williams is second place with nine, and Anabel Medina Garrigues — the player who was on the verge of victory against her in the quarterfinals — is first with 10.i

i Williams is the only player ever to win clay court titles on three different colors of clay, though.i

i Sharapova seems to be going in the right direction, too — while Williams is 28-1 on clay since the start of last year's clay court season, Sharapova is still a very solid 27-2, the losses coming to Williams.i

Serena Williams: "I've played her several times; I just tried to focus on what I was doing," Williams said. "I don't know if her start was shaky, but I felt I played well in the first few games — playing such a great athlete and great tennis player like Maria, you have to come out and play well. I really had no other choice.i

i"She definitely started playing better in that second set — I think she came out with a different game plan. I missed a very crucial point in that first game, but after that I just had to refocus."i

i"It feels good," Williams said. "I don't know how many more I can win. Like I say every day, 'Who knows if I'll ever win another title?' I just want to live in the moment and the dream every chance I get. I feel like every moment I play — I don't know if it's because of what I went through — I feel like I'm so fortunate to be out there and healthy and to have an opportunity to play a sport and be really good at it.i

i"Hopefully I can just keep it going."i

i"This court is definitely different from last year," she said. "It definitely plays more like Roland Garros, so I think that's a plus. It's a little slower than it was last year and plays more like a true clay court. So I think it's great preparation. It's definitely a good start in the right direction. I feel good about it."i

Maria Sharapova: "I started the match really slow today, and against an opponent like her you just can't give her that because she plays extremely well when she's confident," Sharapova said afterwards. "I wasn't reacting well, I wasn't moving well — obviously not only the double faults that I made, but I also didn't have a lot of great first serves in. There were a lot of things I could have changed out there on the court.i

i"I had that break in the second set, but I wasn't able to go with it and hold it. But starting the match like that isn't going to get me anywhere, so that's something I wish I could have changed today."i

i"Obviously it's tough losing in the final today, but I think my preparation so far has been decent, winning a title in Stuttgart and getting to the final in this tournament for the first time," Sharapova said.i

i"One more tune up to go before Roland Garros, and everything seems to be going well."i

Doubles — Final
i[1] B Bryan (USA)/M Bryan (USA) d. [7] A Peya (AUT)/B Soares (BRA) 62 63

i Bob and Mike Bryan won their fifth Madrid doubles title. It was their 87th career trophy and 23rd ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown (23-17 overall).i
i The American twins added to their 2006-07, 2010-11 Madrid trophy haul with victory in 58 minutes.i

Bob Bryan: "It feels great to get another title here in Madrid. It's been a nice clay-court season so far and we're looking forward to two more big events on the dirt. The motivation is to do more of it. We love working hard and getting the pay-off. We're 35 and we're having fun."i

Mike Bryan: "Hats off to Bruno and Alex on a great tournament and a strong start to the year. We had to play really sharp to beat this team and hopefully we can all square off in many more big matches."i

Singles — Final
i[5] R Nadal (ESP) d. [15] S Wawrinka (SUI) 62 64

i Rafael Nadal captured his 23rd ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy and his third title at the Mutua Madrid Open.i
i The 26-year-old Nadal moved to joint second (with Thomas Muster) in the Open Era with 40 clay-court titles. Nadal, who is 40-6 overall in clay finals, now only trails fellow left-hander Guillermo Vilas (46).i
i Nadal won his fifth title of 2013 from seven finals. It was his 55th tour-level crown overall.i

Rafael Nadal: "I'm very happy. I think I played the best match of the whole week today in the final. I had the idea to go out there and to [play] good [forehand] drives, to smack it hard, and try to get many points with my drive. Being able to play here in Madrid and being able to win in front of all my people is something really special. I'm very happy for everything that has happened. Forty titles on clay are far more than I ever dreamed of [winning]."i

Stanislas Wawrinka: "I think he started really well. Even if I'm playing my best tennis and [am] completely fresh, it's really, really tough to beat him. It was tough for me. The ball was flying. I didn't find out a way how to play my game [and] how to be aggressive on the court. He was also dictating the points."i
