Andy is through to a maiden Aussie Open semi-final after Rafa Nadal was forced to retire at 6-3 7-6 (2) 3-0 down.
The most hyped quarter-final in the tournament delieved on so many levels, creating enough talking points to provide the tennis writers days of conjecture.
The recurrence of Nadal's knee problems will be the main talking point, and rightly so because the sport needs a fit Rafa. Andy was the first to tell the crowd afterwards that he was 'gutted' for Nadal: he was, after all, his favourite player to watch, someone who he'd looked up to as a junior.
But that shouldn't detract from his near flawless performance, because in a match where both players served up some sublime stuff, he was always that bit better.
The defending champion actually broke first in both the opening sets, but Andy was in such a good groove he broke back immediately both times.
In the first set, he got himself up a break, before defending three break points to serve it out 6-3.
In the second he took it to a tie-break, and dominated.
By the third, Nadal had been run around so much he was a spent force.
Tactically, Andy appeared to get it spot on: serving solidly and mixing things up with some serve-volley plays. So often, it was that curve-ball brand of tennis that denied Rafa the chance to convert break points.
Off the ground, his looping balls to Rafa's backhand kept him honest, and allowed him to really penetrate with his backhand to the Nadal forehand.
Where before you might have backed Rafa in longer rallies, Andy looked the most likely to convert, and he did more often than not.
Down two sets and a break, Nadal called for the trainer and said he had felt his knee in the second set, but now it was "much worse."
At the resumption, Andy held serve for the 3-0 lead, and faced with the unlikely prospect of going the distance, Rafa did the wise thing and tapped out.
We just hope that it's not a major thing - as a fan of the guy, Andy would be the first to admit that the sport needs Rafa.
"I've known Rafa since I was 13 or 14 and he is someone I always looked up to when I came up through the juniors," Andy said afterwards. "He is my favourite player to watch with his energy and I am a bit gutted for him.
"I had to come through a few tough moments at the start of the match when I was going for it a bit too much but I played really well.
"I had to go for my shots and play big tennis and when the big points come you have got to try to keep them short. You do not want to play long points against Rafa - I served and volleyed a little bit and everything went well.
"If I play like I did tonight I have got a good chance (against Cilic). The nerves are going to be there because it is the chance to make the final of a Grand Slam but I lost to him at the US Open so I will be looking for revenge."
