Marina Erakovic, having lost in her two previous WTA finals, won her first WTA title at the US National Indoor Tennis Championships.i


Marina Erakovic: "If paying your dues is putting all the hours in on the tennis court, getting injured and going back at it again, then I've definitely paid my dues," she said. "I just like playing tennis. It's not always fun and it's not always great, and it doesn't always work out the way you want it to, but when you win tight matches or win titles, it's all worthwhile."i


i"I think it means quite a bit for New Zealand," she said. "We're a small place, we've got about four million people, and tennis isn't the most popular sport - but whenever I'm somewhere else in the world and someone asks me where I'm from, and I say New Zealand, they always say they love New Zealand. And there are always a lot of Kiwis supporting me around the world. So this is great.i


i"I've just talked to home - everyone's super excited. My dad was watching online - I had to tell him congratulations too, because he did so much when I was a kid. This really was teamwork."i


And the guitar trophy couldn't have been a better match for Erakovic, who plays guitar and travels with one. "I really couldn't have thought of a better moment in time than that," she commented.i




Sabine Lisicki: "It's very unfortunate I wasn't able to finish the match," Lisicki commented. "I put all the energy I had left in my body into the match, but I just couldn't keep going. I had been sick the last three days already. But Marina had a great tournament and I want to congratulate her for her first WTA title."i

i• Fifth seed Kei Nishikori won his third ATP World Tour title and second at the ATP World Tour 500 level (Tokyo 2012).i


i• Nishikori did not drop a set during the tournament en route to becoming the first player from Japan to win the trophy in Memphis.i


i• Lopez was appearing in his first ATP World Tour final since May 2011, when he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in Belgrade.i




i• Bob and Mike Bryan won their 85th team title and third this season, adding to their triumphs in Sydney and the Australian Open.i


i• The doubles title match was the first all-American final in Memphis since 2001, when the Bryans defeated Alex O’Brien and Jonathan Stark to win their first career title.i




Kei Nishikori: “I’m very happy with the way I played today. To win this title is an amazing feeling. I tried to concentrate on all the important points. I served really well this week. I was practising a lot and it’s getting better. Hopefully I can win a couple more titles. It’s been a good start to the year.”i


Feliciano Lopez: “I didn’t play a bad match. He was very aggressive from the beginning. I think he probably played his best. I have no regrets. I tried everything I could and he was just the better player today. I hope to keep playing like I did this week.”i




Bob Bryan: “We played great tennis all week and were even better in the final, which is nice. We got out of a couple sticky moments early in the match and the momentum shifted our way. We haven't put up scores like this in a while. It was nice to get it done and not sweat through a match tie-break. It was fun playing against two of our friends, too.”i


Mike Bryan: “It's incredible there hasn't been an all-American final here since 2001, but it was great to be back where we won our first title. Bob and I couldn't have played any better. We love coming back here. To have three titles in four tournaments so far this season is amazing.”i
